Jason is a Seattle based artist who paints and sketches the world around him. Primarily a figurative painter, Jason paints everyday, creating small paintings for $100 each.

His work is up at the Pine Street Ladro through the end of May.

Graham Fracha

Graham Fracha came to Seattle, Washington in 1992 to study at Cornish College of the Arts. Seattle’s thriving art community encouraged Fracha to focus on painting. His saturated color, loose draftsmanship, and bold compositions create unique and intimate experiences with everyday objects.

Fracha’s current mixed media paintings on birch board are inspired by his interest in the ebb and flow of architectural and natural forms. He paints landscapes and dwellings in thoughtful juxtaposition. A patchwork of metal encroaches on the organic simplicity of the board, just as clusters of dwellings encroach the vast landscape. Human presence is a constant dichotomy: intriguing and threatening, beautiful and garish.

Artist Statement
In his current body of work, Morgan Sims delves into his family history by using photos from the 1940s – 1960s to create unique monoprints incorporating spray paint stencils and paper lithography. In this exploration Sims has selected images that are posed for the camera with relatives in groups of two or more. Children are surrounded by the accoutrements of playtime past. Sims’ unusual approach to the subject matter through the mediums of print and stenciling make these pieces compelling. In addition to the photo elements, Sims has applied ornate patterns to disrupt the banality of open space commonly found in aged black and white photos. This added dimension is a merging of interpretation and memory. His interest stems from looking through his relative’s photo albums and wanting to bridge the generation gap between today and yesteryear. In doing so Sims has a lasting connection to his lineage.

Bio
Morgan Sims received his BFA in Printmaking from the University of Washington. He grew up in Sacramento, California, but has lived in Seattle for 8 years. His primary medium is printmaking; however, he works with and assists teaching classes in a variety of mediums at Pratt Fine Arts Center. Morgan participates in many group shows and print exchanges. artist's thoughts •I believe that the cracks in life are stuffed with surprise and the simplest of things are secretly studded with precious gems, tangible only to those who take the time to stumble. I believe that wealth is abundant when the common black of night is regularly jeweled by the light of places we imagine. I believe in the antiquity of line and letters and ink and wet wells and the rough touch of cold pressed paper. I believe in poetry and reading books and the pedestrianism of walking holding hands after eating fabulous homemade food peppered with laughter. I believe in the sensual slip and sound of syllables and winded words that wind into a harmonic human hum which reminds me simply of a soul. I believe in tangible, touchable layers of thick paint that twist truth into a quick glimpse of unique acknowledgment.

bit of background •I have been painting professionally, with the occasional sabbatical to build things, for the past eleven years. I received a double degree in fine art and writing from St. Lawrence University in New York. I studied painting at Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy with a pair of extraordinary, internationally acclaimed South African artists. I’ve lived and painted in Taos, New Mexico and Aspen, Colorado for the majority of my life but I now reside in West Seattle with my humorous husband and my shiny new son. I commute to Vashon Island to paint in a small studio that overlooks Quartermaster harbor and to eat lunch with a gracious and generous woman.

Artist Statement
I am an object-maker born in Madrid, Spain. I firmly believe in work, not inspiration. By assembling and connecting objects, images or materials into unexpected ways they radiate and evoke their own essence, but also contaminate their neighbors. Though I love working in all kinds of media, I have had an especially long personal exploration of calligraphic inks and paper, in some ways the deepest, most original and primitive medium. I am also a constructor with a love of tools, leading to a long series of small sculptures, hand-made boxes and many other unusual objects. Common to it all is a pretty elaborate but precise & consistent iconography, its symbology rooted in nature.
Always water, air, earth, fire, salt and sun; the life that is created by these and who itself creates through these.

Biography
From Madrid, Spain, Carmen Cano has been living and working in the U.S. since 1997. Her studies in Madrid combinedboth fine and graphic arts, and she was an early pioneer in the use of computers in graphic design. As an artist she was involved with other experimental artists, writers and musicians that blossomed in Spain in the wake of the death of Franco and the coming of democracy. She exhibited in a number of Madrid galleries, and in 1991 was awarded 2nd prize in the Biennial of Young Artists in the Mediterranean (Bolougne, France). She was a nationally-recognized designer in Spain,creating many projects for major publishers, the Spanish government, the Barcelona Olympic Games and the Art Expo of Venice among others.Marrying an American and moving to Seattle, since coming to the United States she has quietly but persistently explored new creative techniques of all kinds. She currently oversees digital design and new media operations at a major newspaper.

This work addresses vignettes of the subconscious….images from the not-quite-waking world. These are not “happy” pictures of babies, flowers and sunsets, but rather reflect on emotional and visual introspection. They are meant to be somewhat disturbing and thought provoking.
The images themselves are distilled from various cameras, old and new, film and digital. The large images are printed on an Epson 9600 with archival pigment inks on MOAB Entrada paper and are of a limited edition. The smaller images are hand coated Van Dyke Brown emulsions and contact printed on water color paper and are also limited editions.
John is essentially a self taught photographer/artist who has photographed his friends, family, acquaintances and urban surrounds for 30+ years…………..and occasionally takes classes at the Photographic Center NW when the mood strikes him.

Natalie Oswald is an artist and illustrator residing in Seattle, WA. Her recent paintings are a tribute to all things delightful – birds, flowers, clouds, deer and koi populate her work. In 2005, Joey Bates returned to Seattle after finishing his studies at a small art school in the midwest. His works deals with how our body and facial expressions function as language during conversation. In an age when people are losing themselves in ever- evolving technology, Bates’ works focus on making a quick connection with the audience through facial expression thus reasserting its importance. The work in this show includes number of new works on paper including portraits in pen and ink and a series of hand studies in grapite.

From the Sketchbook: Grist for the Mill is a group of pencil and pen + ink pieces that range from non-realistic doodles to detailed figure studies, which later become paintings and/or prints. All of Karin's artwork starts or is influenced by what shows up in her sketchbook, and this group of drawings and prints reflects her current passion: vintage photos. These photos date from the late 1800's to the 1940's, and intrigue Karin with their hidden stories

ERIK ANDREW

Erik is a featured artist at all the locations I work with. He is an major local talent with skills in many media as well as artforms. His body of work includes many figurative works, both painted and drawn, but he also occasionally indulges in abstract works, exercising experiments in pigment and paint texture. He is a skilled photographer and musician as well. In fact, the improvisational style of jazz is a continual inspiration in his process. -KK


"Eyes bulging out of their heads, bodies attenuating into emaciation, floating in ghostly netherworlds—these are indeed the people in artist Erik Andrew’s bizarre mental neighborhood. Andrew continues his exploration of distorted human figures and the unsettling psychological landscapes in which he finds them in his figurative paintings and drawings, with results that are both haunting and disturbingly funny. The people are rendered with a variety of styles and techniques, in images that vary from deceptively subtle to invasively bold; their expressions are piercing, conveying emotions that are immediately recognizable and yet a bit difficult to place. The paintings here often feature spectral faces and skin-and-bones bodies in mysterious settings—several works address the hypnotic horror of a crowd, surrounding the viewer with weird, oblivious figures."
